Does Cullowhee have a music scene? That’s what a lot of people
ask when talking about it. And yes, Cullowhee does have a music scene
and it is quiet active.
Last Minute Productions
The Music scene is anchored by Last Minute Productions. Last Minute Productions
is the student run, on campus programming board for Western Carolina University.
Last Minute Productions host a wide variety of concerts throughout the
year. They range from small regional acts like Alabaster Suitcase and
Justincase, to large nationally known acts like Ludacris, Montgomery Gentry,
and Fuel. Last Minute Productions also hosts a monthly Open Mic Night
where students can show off their skills.
Concert Series
There are several more concert series on Western’s campus. There
is the Cyber Café Sunday Night Concert Series where local and regional
bands like 12GAUGE, Enliven, Dragonmoose, and the Laura Blackly Band showcase
their talents. There is the LCE (Lectures, Concerts, and Exhibitions)
Committee Concert Series which is a platform for more diverse and artistic
performances like the Afro-Cuban All-stars, author and humorist David
Sedaris, Le Vent du Nord, and Ulali.
Every summer the A.K. Hinds University Center hosts their summer concert
series which brings regional acts like Cast Iron Filter to perform on
their outdoor stage.
Cullowhee Arts Fest
Western has started a new tradition every summer with the Cullowhee Arts
Fest. The Arts Fest plays a host a number of acts ranging from local acts
like the WCU Jazz Ensemble, to Regional acts like Hipshack, to large national
acts like Collective Soul, The Manhattan Transfer, David Sanborne, and
Dilbert McClinton.
Sylva
Sylva has some places that showcase music. The most commonly know is
Soul Infusions. They feature more local and regional acts; almost the
same ones that play the Cyber Café. And, of course there is the
occasional frat party where bands like Inthod, Enliven, and 12GAUGE frequent.
So if you are looking for a concert in the Cullowhee area chances are
you’ll find one, just look for the posters.
