WCU's Service Learning Partners
This web site was created by the spring 2010 English 303 class with the purpose of increasing student interest in and participation with the WCU Center for Service Learning and with selected Service Learning partners, which are community organizations at which students can volunteer for credit. Many worthy organizations partnered with Western Carolina University through the Center for Service Learning, giving students opportunities to further their learning while at the same time benefiting the community around them.
To construct these profiles, the English 303 students traveled to the organizations, conducted on-site interviews and observed the workers in action. This process provided insights into the benefits of volunteering with the Service Learning partners that those who have not directly experienced the challenges and benefits of working with these organizations might not otherwise appreciate. The students then wrote profiles about the community partners, and the class edited the profiles based on a student-created style sheet. This project provided the students with valuable experience conducting interviews and constructing profiles, and provided a deeper appreciation for the work done by these volunteer organizations.
We hope these profiles will provide more information to students about the Service Learning partners and encourage greater participation with these worthy organizations.
